Float Therapy

(Sensory Deprivation)

We are living in the most fast –paced generation our world has ever known. Anxiety and stress take a toll on everyone, so it is not surprising that we are all looking for alternative therapies to help bring the focus back to mental health. Float Therapy is one of the best that alternative medicine has to offer. It is not a new concept at all and research in this field is booming right now. Float Therapy, also known as Sensory Deprivation or REST (Restricted Environmental Stimulation Therapy), was developed about 60 years ago and continues to grow in popularity as more people continue to learn of its incredible benefits.

The float tank contains around 1,000 pounds of Epsom salt, which allows you to float effortlessly as though you are in a zero gravity environment. The water is warm, the room is dim, and you will begin to wonder where the water ends and your body begins as your mind wanders and you experience a deeper level of relaxation than ever before. Your mind and body will unwind and de-stress as you float all of your worries away. Without all the external stimuli, your brain will be allowed to slow down and go into Theta mode, which is a dream-like state. Without expending so much energy on processing your environment, your body will focus on resting, recuperating, and healing.

Float Therapy offers great relief and wonderful benefits. These are cumulative, meaning they build on themselves with each subsequent float session. Basically, it gets better and better the more you float! Float Therapy is changing lives!

Some of the benefits Float Therapy offers are:

  • Stress Relief – Float Therapy offers a deep relaxation that cannot be found anywhere other than in a float tank. With such a reduction in gravity and sensory input, your nervous system gets a much needed break. While floating, the release of hormones and neurotransmitters that have a stressful effect on your body is greatly reduced while the release of beneficial chemicals, such as feel-good endorphins, is increased. Deep relaxation while awake is good for overall wellness!

  • Reduced Pain – Floating helps alleviate back pain, neck pain, arthritis, joint pain, and other pains such as those from conditions like Fibromyalgia. Epsom salt baths are known to be helpful with pain management, but by adding the sensory deprivation aspect of floating, you also get synergistic or additionally positive effects.

  • Brain Function – The brain spends a lot of time balancing and controlling the body against the pull of gravity. Floating reduces the amount of input the brain has to process, which allows it to operate more effectively. When the brain is producing theta waves, it allows you to fully relax, find calm, think introspectively, and is most conducive for vivid memories and mental images, creativity and free association, accelerated learning, and serenity.

  • Injury Healing and Recovery – Floating has been shown to increase blood circulation in both the arms and the legs. Proper circulation to organs, muscles, and tissues helps your entire body function as it was meant to. The reduced pull of gravity can help the healing process of broken bones and sprained joints, provides relief from chronic pain, and even help with structural and spinal alignment.

  • Mineral Absorption – While you are floating, your body is absorbing beneficial minerals from the Epsom salt. It is reported that approximately 85% of Americans are deficient in Magnesium. Epsom salt helps with muscle and joint pain along with providing many other benefits such as healthier muscles, healthier skin, relief from constipation, and better sleep quality. Our bodies use Magnesium to regulate over 30 enzymes, help with the absorption of Calcium, lessens the severity of PMS, can help shorten migraine symptoms, and help in the prevention of health issues such as diabetes, asthma, osteoporosis, stroke, and even heart attack. Sulfates are used by the body for a number of things including aiding digestion and balancing hormone levels as well as detoxification.

  • Strengthened Immune System – Float therapy has an indirect link, but positive impact on the body’s immune system. Floating reduces anxiety and stress, which have both been proven to have a negative impact on the immune system. With a stronger immune system, the body is better prepared to fight off any illnesses and overall stronger.
